" Magnificent Majuli's Mask-making Art" Majuli River Island, Assam Bharat

Majuli, district since 2016, is the largest river island of the world located in Assam Bharat (India), Mask making is one of the most well known craft forms of Majuli in present day. But this craft is not practiced by all the existing Satras. Samaguri Satra is renowned for making masks in the region. Bhakats of this Satra are known to make beautiful masks which are used for religious dance and drama and even exported to foreign countries. Shri Hem Chandra Goswami, the master mask-maker belongs to Samaguri Satra. Dr Ajay Kumar Ojha tries to know the art of mask making craft on the spot itself in the premises of Samaguri Satra - the centre of Majuli's mask making culture.

Majuli is magnificent and people here are marvellous. Government should make every effort to save this island - cultural capital of Assam from gradual erosion. Video made by Ram Charan Das. Voice, stills, edited & produced by Dr Ajay Kumar Ojha.
