REVIEW of Dr. Ajay Kumar Ojha's Book : INDIA IN KOREA

REVIEW of Dr. Ajay Kumar Ojha's Book : INDIA IN KOREA

"India in Korea: Influence of Buddhism in Korea" is an insightful academic and historical monograph authored by Dr. Ajay Kumar Ojha and published by Anuradha Prakashan, available on Amazon. Spanning roughly 100 pages, the book provides a thorough exploration of the profound cultural, spiritual, and philosophical ties between India and the Republic of Korea (South Korea), anchored primarily by the historical transmission of Buddhism.

The central objective of the book is to decode the concept of "Indianness" (the cultural footprint of India) and map its long-standing impact on the Korean peninsula's religious tradition and heritage.

Core Structural Themes of the Synopsis
1. The Historical Confluence and "Indianness"
Dr. Ojha opens the treatise by posing a rhetorical question: "How can 'India' be in Korea?" He answers this by moving away from geographical borders and focusing instead on ideological and spiritual migration. The text systematically outlines how Indian philosophy crossed vast geographies to integrate organically into the early Korean kingdoms, eventually becoming an inseparable pillar of the nation's spiritual psyche.
2. Architecture and UNESCO World Heritage Sites
A substantial portion of the book serves as a cultural guide, using South Korea's iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites as physical evidence of India's spiritual influence. Dr. Ojha discusses:
  • The Seokguram Grotto & Bulguksa Temple: Analyzing the 8th-century masterpieces to show how Indian Buddhist art, iconography, and cave-temple architecture influenced Korean structural design. [1]
  • Haeinsa Temple Janggyeong Panjeon: Highlighting the preservation of the Tripitaka Koreana (the most complete collection of Buddhist texts engraved on woodblocks) as a monumental feat connecting Korean preservation to ancient Indian textual traditions.
3. The Genesis of Seon (Zen) Buddhism
The book chronicles the rise of the "Sansa" (mountain monasteries). Dr. Ojha illustrates how ancient Indian meditative practices evolved into Seon Buddhism in Korea. He examines these active mountain monasteries not merely as historic relics, but as living centers that continue to practice centuries-old traditions inherited from India.
4. The Diplomatic and Contemporary Lens
Leveraging his background as a public intellectual and legal expert, Dr. Ojha bridges antiquity with contemporary international relations. The book notes that the ancient spiritual bond provides a crucial foundation for modern diplomatic ties, emphasizing that mutual civilizational respect makes the India-ROK relationship naturally resilient.
Analytical Value
India in Korea is widely recognized by scholars as a highly readable, tightly woven narrative that avoids dry scholastic jargon. It functions simultaneously as an historical chronicle, a study of religious architecture, and a testament to soft-power diplomacy

Book "The Tharus of West Champaran"
Author : Dr. Ajay Kumar Ojha
    Publisher : Anuradha Prakashan
    Available on Amazon

"The Tharus of West Champaran" is a groundbreaking social science research book authored by Dr. Ajay Kumar Ojha. Published by Anuradha Prakashan, the book is a rigorous documentation and sociological critique compiled from nearly five decades of close personal interaction and field research among the Tharu tribe of West Champaran, Bihar.
    CORE THEME & BACKGROUND :
The book centres on the Tharu community located in the remote, rugged terrains of West Champaran on the Indo-Nepal border—an area famously labeled in the 20th century as "Mini Chambal" and a stronghold of radical movements. Dr. Ojha’s engagement began in 1975 during his school days in Bettiah alongside a Tharu classmate. Witnessing their marginalization, he dedicated decades to researching and advocating for their rights.
The central thesis traces how a community living in a highly fertile landscape faced deep exploitation. For decades, the Tharus of Bihar were denied the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status given to their counterparts in neighboring states, making them highly vulnerable to land alienation, trickery by outsiders, and deep economic suppression.

KEY STRUCTURAL FACETS ANALYZED IN THE BOOK:
    Demystifying the Origins:
Dr. Ojha uncovers the historical roots and ethno-cultural identity of the Tharus, challenging existing misrepresentations and providing a clear, authentic historical timeline
    The Process of Disempowerment (Pauperization):
The book examines how modern political transitions after 1947 impacted the community. It tracks how land grabbing by educated outsiders and corrupt institutional practices converted highly self-sufficient tribals into landless labourers.
    The Battle for Constitutional Rights:
A significant portion of the book serves as a historical record of the socio-political struggle for indigenous identity. It documents the persistent efforts spearheaded by Dr. Ajay Kumar Ojha that successfully led to the Tharus of Bihar being officially granted Scheduled Tribe status in 2003.
    Culture vs. Globalization:
The text functions as a detailed ethnography, mapping out traditional Tharu craftsmanship (particularly their intricate woodwork and weaving skills) and checking how these heritage traits are being threatened by fast-paced global elements.

    AUTHOR'S PROFILE & BOOK UTILITY:
Dr. Ajay Kumar Ojha brings a unique perspective to this study. He is a retired Senior Officer of Indian Broadcasting Service from India's Public Service Broadcaster (Doordarshan), an advocate at the Supreme Court of India, a prolific Author-Editor and a dedicated public intellectual. His dual perspective as a legal professional and a long-term field researcher gives the book teeth.
Academic figures like Sociologist Dr. Avijit Pathak (Former Professor & Chairman, Centre for the Study of Social System, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi), Prof. Avinash Kumar Singh (NIEPA, Delhi). Prof. Jitendra Khatait (IIT, Delhi) have praised the work as an essential read on structural colonization within democratic systems. Rather than being a dry academic register, the book serves as a dynamic administrative guide and manual for planners, policy-makers, and social scientists aiming to construct inclusive tribal development policies.
