KOREAN BUDDHIST TREASURE TROVE

KOREAN BUDDHIST TREASURE TROVE

Recently a statue of Buddha made of granite weighing around 70 ton measuring 5.6 meters has been discovered in Gyeongju city of South Korea which has gone underneath the earth almost 1300 years ago. It is indeed surprising that even after so many years the statue has not lost its special features.

Indo-Korean relation is not new. Very cordial relation existed between the two countries in the past. Buddhism , not as a religion but as a philosophy, has been the main channel of establishing relation between India and Korea since its formal introduction in 372 AD. Buddhism has had indeed a great impact on Korean society and culture, and has been the prime factor for its great and glorious heritage.

Interestingly and surprisingly, seven cultural properties of this small but beautiful country have been included in the UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage and most of them have Buddhist influence.

Gyeongju city and its suburbs have inherited numerous cultural traces of the glory that flowered  and withered in the Silla Kingdom (57 BC - AD 935). Downtown and suburbs preserve many royal burial mounds and Buddhist remains which render aesthetic zenith of art and culture.

The Gyeongju Historical Areas where Mt. Namsan and many cultural properties are located cradle a remarkable concentration of outstanding examples of Korean Buddhist art, in the form of sculptures, reliefs, pagodas, and ruined sites of temples and places between 7th and the 10th centuries.

Bulguksa, the Temple of the Buddha Land, is situated on Mt. Tohamsan in Gyeongju. This Temple blends the architectural mastery and science of the 8th century Silla Kingdom. Seokgatap and Dabotap are the most eye-catching of the architectural masterpieces there. These two pagodas are dedicated to the Shakyamuni Buddha and the Prabhutaratna (the Buddha of Abundant Treasures) and well-exemplify the Silla People's desire to embody Buddhist ideals in the mundane world.

Tucked away on the eastern slope of the peak of Mt.Tohamsan is Seokguram Grotto, a scared hermitage of Bulguksa. This granite sanctuary sums up the religious enthusiasm, architectural technology and immaculate workmanship of the Silla period. Seokguram Grotto consists of an antechamber which holds bas-reliefs of eight guardian deities and two Vajrapanis; a short corridor carved with four spirit-world kings; and the main rotunda, which enshrines in its centre the seated main Buddha, Shakyamuni Tathagata ( The Incarnation of Truth). Along the lower part of the circular wall are bas-reliefs of one eleven-faced Avlokitesvara, ten disciples, Manjusri, Sakradevanam Indra, Mahabrahmandah and Samantabhadra. At about eye-height above these are ten niches, each enshrining a bodhisattva.

The main Buddha under the vault of the rotunda wears  a smile of serene benevolence, manifesting the zenith of what man can achieve through stone sculpture. It is as if the Buddha is about to preach us at any moment, to enlighten the good human nature innate within us.

Tripitaka Koreana Woodblocks

Haeinsa, the Temple of a Vast Sea of meditation, is nestled at a place which is five hours run from Seoul by bus. In the compound of Haeinsa Temple are two main and two small depositories. Of the two main depositories the one on South is is Sudarajang, the Hall of Sutras and the one on the North is Beopbojeon, the Hall of Dharma. They were designed to optimize the preservation of the woodblocks with the proper ventilation, temperature and humidity by taking the advantage of natural conditions and scientific architecture. They have been kept in impeccable condition over the passing of so many centuries.

Tripitaka Koreana consists of 81,258 woodblocks known as Great  Collection of Buddhist Scriptures in Eighty Thousand Woodblocks. Amazingly, there is not a trace of errata or omissions on any of the woodblocks. To guard against insects, decay, frame distortion, cracks and humidity, the wood was pre-treated for several years by a special process. That this  massive cache of woodblocks has been handed down till date in impeccable condition testifies to the outstanding achievements of medieval in printing science. In terms of accuracy, beauty of font style, carving skill and volume the Tripitaka Koreana  is priceless heritage and it has been described by UNESCO  as one of the most important and most complete corpus of Buddhist doctrinal texts in the world.

Once a cultural site has been placed on the World Heritage List, it benefits from all protection such as international assistance, provision of experts and technicians, training of specialists and supply of equipment, loans and grants for carrying out conservation programmes. These sites can be hub of attraction for more and more tourists with additional government support and concern.

The NBA is one of the premier leagues in the world of sports. NBA came into existence in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America. NBA was born when Basketball Association of America  merged with the National Basketball League in 1949. There are thirty teams , 29 of these are from the US while the Toronto Raptors are the Canadian franchise.

The NBA is among the world's richest leagues. In comparison to IPL's 10-yr TV contract worth $1bn its new 9-yr deal is worth $ 24bn.

The first player to be selected from outside of the US was Manute Bol of Sudan who was 7'7" tall. Gursimran "Sim" Bhuller was the first player of Indian origin to play in the NBA  but unlike Satnam, he was born in Canada.

This is indeed a great achievement for this 19 year old boy and inspiration for budding sports persons & also sports lovers. Hail Satnam .

RABINDRA NATH OJHA , JP MOVEMENT, MISA & EMERGENCY

RABINDRA NATH OJHA, JP MOVEMENT, MISA & EMERGENCY

Prof (Dr) Rabindra Nath Ojha
Photo by  Dr Ajay Kumar  (Ojha)

An active Gandhian Social Activist Prof ( Dr) Rabindra Nath  Ojha  always fought for the causes and welfare of Teachers, students &  other deprived sections of society. In the process he has gone on fast -unto -death and courted arrest  several times.

Prof Ojha jumped into JP movement whole-heartedly  in 1974 and  went to jail two times . First time for 18 days  and  second time detained under MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act 1971) itself  for  more than  two months ( In fact detention under MISA was experimented on him for the first time in Champaran). He remained in jail from 13th July 1974  to 16 September 1974. Consequently  during Emergency he was suspended from his job in M.J.K College Bettiah. His family had to suffer tremendous tension &  great hardship.

But detention order was quashed by  High Court in the matter of an application under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, Rabindra Nath Ojha Vs The State of Bihar &Others (Cr.N.J.C.No.183 of 1974 dated 13th September 1974) in the presence of the Hon'ble Justice A.N. Mukharji & the Hon'ble Justice Muneshwari Sahay. On the basis of High Court's order his suspension was revoked and he could regain his job.

Prof Rabindra Nath Ojha represented several times after announcement of JP Senani Samman Yojana. He wrote a letter to the then Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Home, Government of Bihar along with a copy of the order of High Court for ready reference but he could not find his name in the published list of JP Senani.  He  again represented his case to Chairman, Advisory Council JP Andolan Samman Yojana. But he did not get any response and passed away on 13th May 2010 in Delhi without receiving the Samman he deserved. First man to be detained under MISA in the district was deprived of his rightful claim.

Even till date he has not been honoured under JP Senani Samman Yojana  by Government of Bihar due to bureaucratic & other lapses for they could not find any proof of his stay in Bettiah & Motihari Jail due to destruction of the records in flood as reported by district administration. What proof is more authentic than the order of High Court which has  everything in detail? Will  the supreme  sacrifice of a person go in vain just like this & justice be denied ? This is really a shameful state of affair.

DR JITENDRA PRASAD KHATAIT : PRIDE OF THARUS OF WEST CHAMPARAN BIHAR

DR JITENDRA PRASAD KHATAIT :
PRIDE OF THARUS OF WEST CHAMPARAN BIHAR

Till the close of 20th century, Tharus of West Chamaparn, Bihar remained a close society not coming out of the boundaries of Tharuhat - rather they were afraid of or scared of moving out due to obvious reasons. But with change in Century from 20th to 21st Century there has been tremendous transformation  in Tharu society, there has been fundamental changes in their status as well as in West Champaran district. Jharkhand was carved out from Bihar & later Tharus of West Champaran got the status of Schedule Tribe in 2003 thus becoming major Schedule Tribe of Bihar. West Champaran district got connected through railway from all parts of India thus facilitating easy movement of the Tharus. Mobile connectivity led to communication revolution not only in other parts of the country but also in the  backward & neglected area such as Tharuhat of West Champaran.

With the change in the circumstances, there is change in attitude, change in beahviour, change in personality, and opening of the floodgate of opportunities and consequently flowering or blossoming of till now suppressed talent.

Dr Jitendra Prasad Khatait is now pride of the Tharus of West Champaran & immense source of inspiration for his tribe. He comes from Narayan Garh village, West Champaran Bihar. Let us look at his CV which itself is enough to silence those people who call the Tharus "Fool" or "Bagad".

Dr Jitendra Prasad Khatait

Jitendra P. Khatait is currently working as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi since April 2014.

GEETA FIRST BAIGA (PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE TRIBAL GROUPS) GIRL OF MADHYA PRADESH CEATES HISTORY

GEETA FIRST BAIGA (PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE TRIBAL GROUPS) GIRL
 OF MADHYA PRADESH CEATES HISTORY

Baiga is one of the most primitive tribes which has been listed among Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) by the Centre. In this tribe studying is still largely an alien idea.

Geeta Tekam (18) of this tribe created history by becoming the first female member to clear JEE-Main. She belongs to Sunehra village of Mawai block of Mandla district  - one of the most backward regions of Madhya Pradesh  where even primary education is a distant dream.

Geeta's mother is illiterate and father works in a farming field. She is the youngest of the three siblings. Arun Tiwari, girl's teacher, is feeling proud of Geeta and says that the girl is god-gifted.

Girl like Geeta can be source of inspiration for the children of this backward region and has proved that there is no shortage of talent. Given the opportunity, motivation  and support talented students of this tribal areas can make history.

IMPOSSIBILITY BEING TRANSLATED INTO POSSIBILITY IN BULK BY CRACKING IIT IN A VILLAGE OF BIHAR

IMPOSSIBILITY BEING TRANSLATED INTO POSSIBILITY IN BULK

BY CRACKING IIT IN A VILLAGE OF BIHAR

Bihar has always been in  news for wrong reasons. Its negative projection perhaps help fetching good TRP  that is why it is highlighted as such. There may be many positive or inspirational stories which do not get the attention of media for obvious reasons which is indeed painful & shocking too.

Can any one believe? Can any one imagine? Can any one  digest? For Bihar impossible is a word to be found in the dictionary of fools. They translate impossibility into possibility.  When cracking IIT seems to be impossible, 18 boys from the same village of Gaya district have achieved that impossible.

We salute  eighteen students of Bunkaron  village for achieving this unbelievable feat and that too amidst great constraints.

Cracking IIT seems impossible? 18 guys did it from the same village!
They are poor and they can hardly get a place to study peacefully. They are poor and they can not afford admission into good schools. They are poor and they do not have access to quality coaching centres. But  they are rich in will, determination & dedication.

There is powerloom in each and every house  which is a constant source of noise pollution & air pollution too. But the boys have managed to ink their success story.

It has been reported that powerloom business is on decline in this village and the villagers have invested their energies on the education of their children. Students who have already cleared IIT also extend their full support & guidance  which have made a monumental difference.
