Vasu Sojitra lost his right leg to a blood infection at 9 months old. Rather than letting his disability define him, Vasu has always treated his amputation as a mere hiccup in life.

“Out on a Limb” profiles Vasu's inspiring story and follows him as he ventures deeper into the backcountry to summit peaks, drop into avalanche zones, send cliffs, and ski deep powder lines, all completely unassisted. This outdoor short film leaves audiences wanting more and asks us to reflect on the obstacles in our own lives.[

Vasu played soccer, hockey and skateboarded in school. His parents never treated him any different from his brother. But a hard fall at the age of ten meant he had to give up the artificial limb too.

The grace in his glide belies his disability.Or may be it is his attitude that does it."Disability is a myth. Having one leg isn't a big issue, it's just a hiccup" says Vasu who lives in Connecticut, US.

A mechanical engineer by qualification Vasu's job is that of an Assistant Director for adaptive sports programmes in a non-profit for the disabled.

CSS Officers Led by Rathindra Kumar Ojha Demand Parity with IAS & Other Services

CSS Officers Led by Rathindra Kumar Ojha Demand Parity
with IAS & Other Services

Press Information Bureau
Government of India
Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions
                                                                                           20 April 2015
CSS Officers demand parity with IAS and other services
A delegation of Central Secretariat Service (CSS) employees today met Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh and demanded parity in pay/salary, promotion and perks with IAS and other services.

Shri R.K. Ojha, the representatives of the Central Secretariat Service Forum led the delegation and said that Central Secretariat Service Group ‘A’ has a cadre strength of over 2200 officers starting from Under Secretary level up to the Deputy Secretary, Director, Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary. Prior to the 6th CPC, the only facility which was permitted to other organised Group ‘A’ services was provision of Junior Administrative Grade (JAG) or Non-Functional Selection Grade (NFSG). However, the 4th, 5th and 6th Pay Commission Reports have never said that the benefits which are given to organised Group ‘A’ service will not be available to Central Secretariat Service. Therefore, in the interest of harmonious relationship between different officers of same rank and different services, it is important to have a proper harmony and parity as far as environment and conditions of work are concerned. In a memorandum to the Minister, the CSS forum pointed out a number of anomalies and said that in certain cases, a Deputy Secretary of CSS who has put in more than 15 years of service neither gets the same pay scale nor promotion as Joint Secretary nor the Non-Functional Upgradation (NFU).

Rathindra Kumar Ojha with Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh

Dr. Jitendra Singh gave a patient hearing and said, the Central Secretariat Service is one of the earliest organised services in the country and an important constituent of the Central Government machinery. While important structural changes have been made several times since the inception of the service, one common thread running through all the stages of the evolution of the service has been the role of the service in ensuring continuity of administration in the Central Secretariat. He said that it is responsibility of the government to create a congenial working environment for them.

Dr. Jitendra Singh said, the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) has, in the last ten months, taken several steps for improving the service conditions of its employees and the same approach will also be followed in case of CSS employees who provide strength to the set- up at middle management level of the government. The demands and proposal put forth by them will be processed sympathetically and sought to be addressed to the maximum extent, he assured.

A Hindu Wedding for a US Lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard

A Hindu Wedding for a US Lawmaker
Tulsi Gabbard

Call it a simple and svelte Pacific Hindu Wedding. In an event unique in the history of US' politics and that of Hawaii, the country's 50th state, a lawmaker from the famed island was married in a Hindu ceremony on Thursday, with the chanting of Vedic mantras and the dappling backwaters of the Pacific bouncing off lush green mountains in the backdrop.

Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard's Hindu background is no secret. Born in American Samoa in 1981 to Carol and Mike Gabbard, she was the fourth of five children, all brought up in the Brahma Madhwa Gaudiya Sampradaya that her mother embraced following her introduction to the Krishna movement in the US. She named her five children Bhakti, Jai, Aryan, Tulsi, and Vrindavan.

In a sylvan, secluded spot on the eastern shore of Oahu, at a historic site that native Hawaiian people used as a fish pond, Tulsi, 33, and her fiance Abraham Williams, 26, a cinematographer she met on the campaign trail, were married by a Hindu priest. Tulsi wore an exquisite indigo coloured gown and the groom, an elegant white suit.

The ceremony, according to those who attended it, concluded with a traditional yoga kirtan with friends and family celebrating the newly married couple with Hawaiian song and dance, followed by a vegetarian meal (both the bride and groom are vegetarians).

Indian-American Vivek Murthy is US's youngest surgeon-general, takes oath on Gita

Indian-American Vivek Murthy is US's youngest surgeon-general,
takes oath on GITA

At about the same time the death of a farmer in New Delhi brought the capital's attention on farm suicides, a young Indian-American was invoking with gratitude the Indian roots of his success in the United States: his agriculturist grandfather's resilience and sacrifice that led his parents emigration and his own remarkable achievement in this country.

"By any reasonable measure, I shouldn't be standing here. My father is the son of a farmer in rural India. He was supposed to have been a farmer, as was I," Vivek Murthy recalled to a gaggle of supporters gathered at a military base in Fort Myer after he was administered oath (on a Bhagavad Gita) on Wednesday by vice president Joe Biden as the 19th surgeon general of the United States, America's doctor-in-chief.

Clearly unaware of the tumult in India over the farmer suicide, Murthy then added, "But for my grandfather's insistence that his son get an education, even if that meant going into debt, we might have never left that village (Hallegere in Karnataka's Mandya district) to go out in the world and - as my grandfather also insisted - start fixing what needed fixing."

Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur. Minimize your movements to a few steps that reach a nearby safe place.

Follow these steps incase you feel tremors:
If indoors

1. Drop to the ground; take cover by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and hold on until the shaking stops. If there is no table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.

2. Protect yourself by staying under the lintel of an inner door, in the corner of a room, under a table or even under a bed.

3. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, (such as lighting fixtures or furniture).

4. Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.

5. Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, load bearing doorway.

6. Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.

If outdoors

1. Avoid moving. However, move away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires.

2. If you are in open space, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings; at exits; and alongside exterior walls. Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects.

If in a moving vehicle

1. Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.

2. Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.

If trapped under debris

1. Do not light a match.

2. Do not move about or kick up dust.

3.Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.

4. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout if you have no other way to communicate. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust so be careful.
