BIHARI VARDHAMAN MAHAVEER
The childhood name of Bhagwan Mahaveer was Vardhaman, which means "One who grows", because of increased prosperity in the kingdom at the time of his birth. The name Mahaveer is a Sanskrit word meaning " Great Warrior" as Mahaveer brought a terrifying serpent under his control during his boyhood. He was born into a royal family in Vaishali district of BIHAR (INDIA).
Although Mahaveer is generally regarded as founder of Jainism, he is more properly regarded as reformer of Jainism. He was the twenty fourth and last Tirthankara of Jainism of present time cycle. He left his home at age of thirty in pursuit of spiritual awakening. He practiced intense meditation & severe penance for the next twelve and half years after which he attained KEVAL GYAN or enlightenment.
Philosophy of Bhagwan Mahaveer has eight cardinal principles, three metaphysical & five ethical, the objective of which are to elevate quality of life.
Three Metaphysical Principles:
1. Anekantavada
2. Syadvada
3. Karma
Five Ethical Principles:
1. Ahimsa : Non -violence
2. Satya : Truthfulness
3. Asteya : Non-stealing
4. Brahmacharya : Chastity
5. Aparigraha : Non-possession, non-attachment
Teachings of Bhagwan Mahaveer are for the welfare of humanity and shall be the answer to the challenges of modern world.
