"India builds world's highest motorable road
in Union Territory Ladakh"
The Border Road Organisation (BRO) has constructed World's highest motorable road yet another milestone, and thus smashing the previous record that was held by Bolivia. The road has been built in eastern Ladakh at a staggering height of 19, 300 feet.
BRO has built a 52 Km black-top road across Umlinga Pass , breaking the previous record for a road in Bolivia linking to the volcano at 18,953 feet .
The road was built at a greater elevation than Mount Everest base camps, with the south base camp in Nepal being 17,598 feet and north base camp in Tibet being 16,900 feet .
Umlinga pass is now connected with a blacktop road to enhance socio-economic conditions and promote tourism in Ladakh. It will prove to be a boon to the local population as it offers an alternate direct route connecting Chisumle and Demchok from Leh .

This road was built at a considerably higher height than the Siachen Glacier that stands at 17,700 feet above sea level. The temperature drops to -40 degrees Celsius in the winter , and the oxygen level is about half of regular areas at this altitude which makes infrastructure development in such a severe and difficult environment, exceedingly arduous.
