UNIQUE UNIVERSIADE - AN INTERNATIONAL MULTI-SPORT EVENT ORGANIZED FOR UNIVERSITY ATHLETES
The International University Sports Federation, FISU, developed within university institutions. The mission of FISU is to propagate sports values and promote sports practice which should be in perfect synergy and complementarity with university spirit. FISU organizes Universiade - an international multi-sport event for university athletes. The name is combination of "University" and "Olympiad" often referred to as the World University Games.

This international sporting and cultural festival is staged every two years in a different city. It is only second to the Olympic games. Most of the medalists of Olympiad come from Universiade.
Summer Universiade embraces FISU's motto of "Excellence in mind and body". It incorporates educational and cultural aspects into 12 days of sports competitions. It is open to athletes between the ages of 17 to 28 who are attending colleges or graduate schools. It allows university students-athletes from all over the world to celebrate with the host city in a true spirit of friendship and sportsmanship. It currently includes 10 compulsory sports (13 compulsory disciplines) and upto 3 optional sports:

. Fencing
. Football
. Artistic Gymnastics
. Rhythmic Gymnastics
. Judo
. Swimming
. Diving
. Water Polo
. Table Tennis
. Tennis
. Volleyball

2015 Summer Universiade is the 28th in the series which is being held in Gwangju, South Korea from 3rd July -14th July 2015.The largest ever in Universiade history around 13000 athletes from 144 countries will compete for 272 gold medals in 21 sports at 38 venues.

Gwangju, the sixth largest city in South Korea, was established in 57 BC. "Gwang" means light and "Ju" means province. Next that is 29th Universiade will be held in 2017 from 19th August to 30th August in Taipei.
