But No Hindu Country in the World



By number of followers Hinduism is the third largest religion of the world. But surprisingly it is not the state religion or preferred religion anywhere.

When it comes to state support, Christianity has preference over others in 28 countries. But it is the official religion in only 13 countries where as Islam is the state religion in 27 countries.

Altogether there are 80 countries in the world which do have either a state religion or one that is favoured by them.


There are 10 countries in the world including China and North Korea which actively discourage religious practices.

22% of the countries of the world that is 43 countries have an official state religion.

20% that is 40 countries have a preferred religion.

53% that is 106 countries do not have an official or preferred religion.

5% that is 10 countries are hostile to religious institutions.


Buddhism is state religion in Bhutan and Combodia, and favoured by the state in Burma, Laos, Mongolia and Sri Lanka. 

But Hinduism is not the state religion of any country in the world and is not the preferred religion either.
