"I keep loving Sparrow (Gauraiya) from childhood days"

20th March is being celebrated as World Sparrow Day to raise awareness of the house sparrow, popularly known as Gauraiya in India, and other common birds to urban environment, and of threats to their population. The first World Sparrow Day was celebrated in 2010 in different parts of the world.

Sparrow has been constant companion in our journey, be it rural or urban, and has been associated with human settlements for around 10,000 years. So let us celebrate the spirit of togetherness by making effort to save this beautiful cute house bird. So let us "rise for sparrow".

Here are five things we can do to save sparrows:
-The easiest thing one can do is to put bird feeders outside your house.
-Also, it has been observed that many people put water bowls during summer season outside their houses for birds to re-hydrate.
-Grow more plants as this may encourage some birds, who are common to that habitat, to come back.
-Talk to people living around your society to create awareness about sparrows.
-Discourage the use of excessive insecticides and pesticides in gardens.
