Amazing Ahmedabad :India's First World Heritage City


Now it is official. Ahmedabad one of the biggest cities of Gujarat, the home state Prime Minister Narendra Modi,  gets the tag of becoming first World Heritage City of India. It was inscribed as a World Heritage City at the 41st session of World Heritage Committee meeting of UNESCO held in Karkow, Poland on 8th July 2017.

The meeting hailed intricately carved wooden havelis of Ahmedabad dating back hundreds of years.The city was also recognized as the cradle of non-violent freedom struggle of India led by Mahatma Gandhi.

Out of the 287 World Heritage Cities , only two were in the Indian subcontinent - Galle in Sri Lanka and Bhaktpur in Nepal. Now the Walled City of Ahmedabad will be the third city in the subcontinent joining the likes of Paris, Cairo and Edinburgh.

The nomination of Ahmedabad was supported by 20 countries. The countries gave their view in favour of Ahmedabad. They cited the harmonious co-existence of Hindu, Muslim and Jain communities.

The walled city of Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah in the 15th century, on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati river. It presents a rich architectural heritage.
