ANOTHER INDEPENDENCE :
ANOTHER FREEDOM AT MIDNIGHT
AFTER 68 YEARS
People of India & Bangladesh living in Enclaves will now become free from the pangs of motherland. At the stroke of midnight on 31st July 2015, 14,214 citizens of Bangladesh, who had been living in 51 enclaves within India a total area of 7,110 acres would become Indian citizen. At the same time 111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh a total area of 17,160 acres merged with that country. Of the 37,000 living there, 979 have opted to move to India. Thus the total number of Indian citizens will be 15,193. Thus a chaotic border gets straightened after almost 7 decades 68 years to be precise.
This was a legacy of the British who left the boundary issue unresolved in the eastern provinces of Bengal at the time of demarcation of Indian and Pak borders.

An enclave is a patch of land encircled by another country's territory.Enclaves include two dozen counter-enclaves(enclaves within enclaves) and also include what's known as the world's only counter-counter enclave - a patch of Bangladesh that is surrounded by India, that in turn surrounded by Bangla territory. These enclaves, known as Chitmahals or sometimes called Pasha Enclaves, dot the Indo-Bangla land boundary in north Bengal. They date back to 18th century when they were part of the Coochbehar and Rangpur princely states. Coochbehar merged with India where as Rangpur with Pakistan.
Indian enclaves are spread over Lalmonirhat, Panchagarh, Nilphamari and Kurigram districts of Bangladesh whereas all Bangladeshi enclaves are situated in Coochbehar. Merger of the princely states with India and Pakistan did not change the status of these enclaves. Consequently the people living in them did not enjoy full legal rights as citizens of either country thus pushing them into the black hole of untold misery & limitless pang - and becoming a hotbed of criminal activities.

This historical pact covers an area about half the size of Hong Kong island or around two thousand cricket stadiums. India & Bangladesh share a 4,156 km border - the fifth largest in the world with its endless zigzagging.

Thus India and Bangladesh under the dynamic & visionary leadership of their respective present governments took a giant step after decades-long stalled negotiations toward ending one of the most complicated and protracted border disputes in the world. The move came merely two months after the Asian neighbours ratified the land agreement - making borders more secure and people's life more stable.
