SPECIAL MENTION : Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi , while making a marked break from the past in his maiden Independence Day (15th August 2014) speech with many firsts from the ramparts of La Qila, stressed on making all towns and villages litter-free and building separate toilets for girls in every school elevating cleanliness and sanitation in the hierarchy of concerns facing the country. Over 53% of Indian households do not have latrines on their premises. In villages, this figure stands at 69% ; in urban areas it is 18.6% according to the 2011 Census.
