"Mahatma Gandhi is one of the few thinkers, social reformers and political activists who not only propounded new ideas but also put them into institutional practice. Though his whole life and work is educational in nature, he did make specific contribution to the area and discipline of education, in terms of ideas, policy and institutional practice. He put emphasis on the character building component of education. In fact, his experiment was a part of his experiments with truth."

"At Champaran, Gandhi made two experiments : Satyagraha and Buniyadi Shiksha. He launched Satyagraha movement to free the Indigo planters/farmers from the exploitative condition. He also established a number of Buniyadi schools in the area to generate awareness, and develop critical consciousness to fight against injustice and secure one's own livelihood, and also pay attention to cleanliness and sanitation as according to Gandhi ' Cleanliness is godliness'. For him education includes sanitation too."

There has been, in recent years, revival of interest in Gandhian educational ideas with growing unemployment among the educated and eroding moral values reflected in alarming youth delinquency, youth depression, youth suicidogenic impulses, youth deviant behaviour. The current emphasis on 'Skill India', 'Start-up India', 'Swachh Bharat Mission' , which talk about skill & value-based education, and also cleanliness & sanitation  , takes us back to the core educational ideas of Gandhi.

On the whole there is growing realization about the systematic malaise in the education system and need to examine the current educational problems and issues in the light of some of the seminal ideas and paths shown by great educational thinkers and social activists, like Mahatma Gandhi.

It is with this background that to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Department of Educational Policy (NIEPA) under dynamic Headship & leadership  of Prof. Avinash Kumar Singh in association with Gandhi Smriti & Darshan Samiti,  organized a National Discussion Meet on 'Relevance of Gandhian Educational Ideas:Implications for Policy and Practices' at NIEPA, New Delhi on 4th & 5th October 2019. And as per the response & feedback  of the experts & participants, it can be said,  without any doubt or hesitation, that this minutely monitored & marvellously managed, magnificent mega Discussion Meet, in which around 33 experts drawn from different fields from all over the country presented their papers, has fulfilled its objective.
