Goldy Thangavelu Mariyappan "The Paralympian" :
Deformity Transformed into Prosperity
Thangavelu Mariyappan was injured in a bus accident when he was just five and playing just in front of his house. He lost one of his legs. But that did not stop him from taking part in sports events alongside regular competitors, and even winning.

Mariyappan comes from a very poor family belonging to Periavadagampatti village in Salem district of Tamil Nadu India. His family lives in a rented house of 500 rupees. And his mother sells vegetables on bicycle for subsistence and has taken loan of 3 lac rupees for the treatment of his son.
Abandoned by his father 10 years ago, Mariyappan's mother Saroja single-handedly looked after her four children.

Adversity did not dampen the spirits of Mariyappan. His coach R Sathyanarayanan also inspired and motivated Mariyappan immensely.
To every disadvantage there is a corresponding advantage - the para-athlete Mariyappan is one burning example of this like Chandrashekher the spin bowler in cricket.
Mariyappan has used his deformity to immense advantage. He uses his limp to great advantage and he is intelligent enough to master that art.

Let us salute this vegetable seller's son who created history beating poverty and deformity by high-jumping to para gold in Rio - in fact the first Indian to win a high jump gold in Paralympics.
