Babulal makes & repairs shoes. He sits with all his materials on the pavement near Lodi Colony Main Market Bus Stand in New Delhi. Very simple,very innocent, very disciplined, very punctual, very reasonable - a man with transparent personality living in a metro city where so called educated high class people who have multiple personalities depending upon their interest & condition.

Now-a-days sincere & honest persons are treated as fools as they are not manipulators. They are overburdened with responsibilities but awards/prizes/appreciations /foreign trips /facilities are grabbed by butterers, spoons & lobbyists. These silent workers are humiliated in front of every one and they have to even hear such sentences as" You are inefficient, you may resign", "This is professionally untenable, you may take VRS". In this kind of a situation, company of Babulal like persons is very soothing/encouraging/inspiring.

These high class people including bureaucrats & politicians have opaque personality & artificial life. They are not true to their near & dear ones, even to themselves.They are alienated from themselves. They are master manipulators, they commit all sorts of wrongs but they are efficient in justifying and defending. Most of them are in the race of grabbing money by hook or by crook. It is now an open secret.

But Babulal is very sincere & honest to his profession. Whatever he earns, he earns by doing hard work and not deceiving anyone, not looting anyone. He carries a smiling face, a natural one not artificial or computerized as per the need like that of the high class people. Whatever he speaks he speaks from his heart. Though not educated he is a successful graduate in the field of philosophy of life.

I learn a lot of things from him. For me he is the most cultured & civilized person. I am scared in the company of so called high class elite people but I am very comfortable and safe in his benign company. And that is why whenever I pass through this area I automatically get driven towards him for the last two decades since I came into his contact. I am dwarfed by his towering personality. He is god-incarnate & place where he sits, is abode of god - a temple.

आज अचानक नवेन्द्र का फ़ोन आया। पता चला कि शंकर महतो नहीं रहे।   नवंबर 2012 में उनका निधन हो गया। ऐसा लगा जैसे मैंने कोई अपना खो दिया। हाँ बिलकुल अपना। नवेन्द्र शंकर महतो का बेटा है।

शंकर महतो को मैं 1988 से जानता हूँ जब मैं  थरुहट पहली बार गया था। अपने रिसर्च के सिलसिले में।  उन्होंने ही मुझे अपने गाँव बखरी बाज़ार(पश्चिम चम्पारण, बिहार)  में रहने की इजाज़त दी गांववालों के विरोध करने पर भी। अपनी झोपड़ी में रहने दिया परिवारवालों के नाखुश होने पर भी। मैं महीनों उनकी झोपड़ी में रहा।

अगर उनका प्यार और आशीर्वाद मुझे नहीं मिलता तो मैं अपना डोक्टोरेट नहीं कर पाता। वो एक महान व्यक्ति थे उनमें। मानवता कूट कूट कर भरी थी। इसीलिए वो महान आत्मा भी थे। ज़्यादा पढ़े लिखे नहीं थे पर उनका विचार, उनका व्यवहार , उनका संस्कार आजकल के तथाकथित पढ़े लिखे लोगों से अप्रत्याशित रूप से अदभुत था। इसी से कहा जाता है कि पढ़ने  लिखने से आदमी महान इंसान नहीं होता, होता है तो अपने महान कर्मों से।

आज के तथाकथित  पढ़े लिखे लोग कुसंस्कारों से ग्रस्त हो गए हैं , जोड़ तोड़ में लग गए हैं , हर तरह का कुकर्म कर उसे सही ठहराने में लगे हुए हैं। क्या यही विकास का पैमाना है ?

शंकर महतो जी का व्यक्तित्व बहुत विशाल था और उनका कृतित्व भी। थारू जनजाति के कल्याण और विकास हेतु उनके   अथक प्रयास सदैव याद किये जायेंगे। निरंतर संघर्ष के उपरान्त, देश की आज़ादी के करीब 55 वर्षों के पश्चात   चम्पारण के थारू जनजाति  को  2003 में अनुसूचित जनजाति का दर्ज़ा मिला - इस संघर्ष में शंकर महतो जी की  महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका रही ।

शंकर महतो जी की महान आत्मा और महा व्यक्तित्व को शत शत नमन।

Members of Badaka Singhanpura Pravasi Sangh met in New Delhi as a part of Holi Milan Samaroh and talked about development taking place in their village Badaka Singhanpura (Bihar) and also discussed the problems faced by the village. They all resolved to extend their full support & co-operation for the betterment of the village.

Badaka Singhanpura Pravasi Sangh is outcome of the dynamic

initiative taken by Shri Rathindra Kumar Ojha. The objective of the Sangh is purely cultural & social. It is a unique effort to bring all the persons belonging to the village leaving outside village for employment & livelihood on one platform, so that they can interact periodically warding off the feeling of alienation and think about their well being as well as that of the village.

Veteran Singer Pawan Ojha and upcoming singer Ajay Kumar Ojha enthralled the audience with their songs.
