Mawlynnong has about 500 residents with 100 % literacy.

Mawlynnong is situated in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya and comes under Pynursla community development block.

Mawlynnong people belong to  Khasi tribe. And as is the tradition of of Khasi people, property and wealth are passed from mother to youngest of her daughters, who also keeps the surname of mother.

Mawlynnong is  located 90 Kms from Shillong, capital of Meghalaya.

Agriculture is the chief occupation of the local population with betal nut being the main crop. But now it can be said tourist industry also, looking at the daily flow of people and vehicle in the village. We can see charges being collected for parking, for toilet.We can see mushrooming of the tourist lodge, & restaurant also.

Mawlynnong village is famous for its cleanliness and sanitation. The waste is collected in dustbins made of bamboo and diverted towards a pit and then used as manure.

In 2003 , the travel magazine "Discover India" declared this village as the "cleanest" in Asia. The phrase has caught on since then and the village has become one of the most sought-after tourist destinations not only in Meghalaya but in India and abroad.
