Srimanta Sankardev was a 15-16th century Assamese polymath. He was a saint-scholar, poet, playwright, social religious reformer and a figure of importance in the cultural and religious history of Assam. His literary and artistic contributions are integral part of Assamese society. A renowned cultural institution in the Panjabari area of Guwahati  has been named after this great personality - Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra. It houses a cultural museum, library and various facilities for preserving, demonstrating and performing  cultural items, besides a children's park. This Kalakshetra boasts of being North East India's largest cultural congregation. Not only that. Nice view of the hills of Shillong Plateau can be seen from the fields of Kalakshetra.
