NABARD and RBI Innovation Hub Collaborate for Digital Agri-lending

NABARD and RBI Innovation Hub Collaborate for revolutionizing

Digital Agri-lending

In a landmark partnership aimed at revolutionizing digital agri lending, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) will integrate its e-KCC loan origination system portal with the Public Tech Platform for Frictionless Credit (PTPFC) of Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH).

NABARD, India’s apex development bank, developed the Loan origination system portal to facilitate digital Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan processing for cooperative banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs). Through the integration with PTPFC, about 351 district and state cooperative banks and 43 RRBs will gain access to a range of services including digital state land records, satellite data, KYC, credit history and transliteration for more effective credit underwriting. The partnership agreement was signed by Mr. Shaji K V, Chairman, NABARD and Mr. Rajesh Bansal, CEO, RBIH.

“The digitisation of agricultural lending will ensure instant doorstep delivery of credit to farmers while improving the efficiency of banks, advancing NABARD’s mission of fostering rural prosperity.” Mr. Shaji K V, Chairman NABARD said.

The collaboration between NABARD and RBIH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the RBI, will streamline the lending process and reduce the turnaround time for loans from three to four weeks to just five minutes for India’s 120 million farmers.

"This partnership is not just about technology integration, it's about reimagining rural finance and empowering our Indians with quicker, more reliable access to credit. It signifies our commitment to using innovation to deliver frictionless finance for a billion Indians,” Mr. Bansal said.

The paper-based loan process takes up substantial amounts of a farmer’s time, especially to acquire land records, that they could spend on income-generating activities. The PTPFC has seen the participation of over 10 states in making digital land records available to facilitate the seamless flow of credible information for lenders.

The pilot phase of the partnership will see implementation in select RRBs including the Karnataka Gramin Bank and Maharashtra Gramin Bank and cooperative banks in Andhra Pradesh. The goal is to scale the digital lending platform to cover about 5 crore KCC loans across all cooperative banks and RRBs nationwide.

This initiative will significantly reduce operational overheads for lenders while deepening access to credit, thereby fostering a more inclusive and efficient rural financial ecosystem. Both NABARD and RBIH are committed to this collaboration which will greatly contribute to the vision for a Viksit Bharat.

NABARD Launches Climate Strategy 2030 on World Earth Day

NABARD Launches Climate Strategy 2030 on World Earth Day

In a significant stride towards sustainable development, NABARD unveiled its Climate Strategy 2030 document on the occasion of Earth Day. The document was released by Shri Shaji K V, Chairman NABARD. This comprehensive strategy aims to address India’s escalating need for green financing.

Despite the pressing demand, where India requires approximately US$ 170 billion annually to reach a cumulative total of over US$ 2.5 trillion by 2030, current green finance inflows are critically insufficient. As of 2019-20, India garnered about US$ 49 billion in green financing, merely a fraction of what is needed. With the majority of funds earmarked for mitigation, only US$ 5 billion was allocated towards adaptation and resilience, reflecting the minimal private sector engagement in these areas due to challenges in bankability and commercial viability.

NABARD’s Climate Strategy 2030 is structured around four key pillars to address this demand: (i) Accelerating Green Lending across sectors, (ii) Playing a broader Market-Making Role (iii) Internal Green Transformation of NABARD, and (iv) Strategic Resource Mobilization.

This strategic initiative not only reinforces NABARD’s commitment to environmental stewardship but also positions it as a pivotal player in India’s transition towards a resilient and sustainable economy.

The Animal Care Organization (TACO) Celebrates Two Years of Pioneering Animal Welfare in India

The Animal Care Organization (TACO) Celebrates Two Years of Pioneering Animal                      Welfare in India

The Animal Care Organization (TACO) marked a significant milestone on 22nd April 2024, celebrating two years of unwavering dedication towards animal welfare across India.  Established in 2022 by the Anil Agarwal Foundation (AAF), Vedanta Ltd.'s social impact arm, TACO operates on six core pillars: shelter, hospital, academy, wildlife conservation, disaster relief efforts and sector development. This holistic approach aligning with the 'One Health' model ensures a lasting impact on the well-being of animals and the ecosystem they inhabit.

Sterilization of animals being done at the TACO Faridabad Shelter

Within just two years, TACO's dedication has demonstrably transformed India's animal welfare landscape. Over 60,135 animals have directly benefited from their interventions. This impact is visible at the Foundation's shelter in Faridabad, which has become a sanctuary for over 160 rescued animals. Here, they receive vital medical care, including surgeries if needed, and a nurturing environment to heal and rehabilitate. Understanding that wildlife plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy planet, TACO has partnered with the Government of Rajasthan to strengthen wildlife conservation efforts at Ranthambore National Park. Its contribution of INR 1 crore has facilitated the deployment of patrolling vehicles, empowering park rangers with improved mobility and surveillance capabilities to combat poaching and protect endangered species. Additionally, AAF has allocated an initial corpus of Rs. 100 crores to support TACO's ambitious vision.

Reflecting on TACO's journey, Ms. Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Anchor, TACO, Chairperson, Hindustan Zinc Ltd and Non-Executive Director, Vedanta Ltd, said, “At TACO, we believe in the inherent value of all living beings and the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. From the very beginning, TACO's vision has been to create a lasting impact on animal welfare in India. Our efforts are driven by a profound commitment to creating an ecosystem where animals are treated with compassion and respect. The initiatives undertaken by TACO in the past two years are a testament to the power of collective action in realizing this vision.”

TACO recognizes that creating a lasting impact on animal welfare requires a shift in societal attitudes. To achieve this, they have actively engaged with communities in Delhi-NCR. Through various awareness campaigns and workshops, they have addressed responsible and compassionate treatment of animals, advocated for responsible pet guardianship, and encouraged community participation in animal welfare initiatives.

Acknowledging the critical need for accessible veterinary services in urban areas, TACO is strategically extending its reach. Recognizing the fast pace of city life, they have introduced veterinary ambulance services, ensuring animals in distress receive timely medical intervention. The organization also plans to deploy a Mobile Health Van soon in Delhi-NCR. Additionally, training workshops under TACO Academy for veterinary professionals in Delhi-NCR are bridging the gap in urban veterinary care. By building veterinary capacity, TACO ensures animals in these densely populated areas can access the care they need.

TACO's commitment extends to emergency situations as well. During the Delhi Floods of 2023, TACO mounted extensive relief and rescue efforts, saving the lives of countless animals. Their swift response with boats and specialized rescue teams ensured that even animals stranded in remote areas were not left behind. This exemplifies their dedication to animal welfare in even the most challenging circumstances. In total, through flood relief and rescue efforts like these, TACO has ensured the well-being of a staggering 4,850 animals across Delhi and Haryana.

Similarly, TACO’s team at Faridabad has been constantly attending to rescue calls round-the-clock. Recently, a speeding car struck a bull in Faizupur Khadar in Ballabgarh, Haryana. A local school principal, Shiv Kumar, found the injured animal and sought TACO's help. The shelter’s veterinary team responded swiftly, arriving at the scene with their ambulance. Their expertise and advanced medical equipment proved critical in stabilizing the bull's condition and transporting it to the shelter for further treatment, offering it a second chance at a healthy life.

Beyond emergency response, TACO's influence extends far and wide. Their commitment to preventive care ensures the overall health of animals in the communities they serve. This includes vaccinations and treatment for common illnesses, providing much-needed preventative measures to keep animals healthy.

With a steadfast commitment to long-term sustainability and ambitious plans for expansion across India, TACO is poised to make an indelible mark on the future of animal welfare in the country. Their vision extends beyond immediate needs, aiming to build a future where respect and care for animals are ingrained in society.

NABARD, along with its NBFC subsidiary NABSAMRUDDHI, commemorated World Water Day on 22 March 2024 by launching the first phase of a nationwide Climate Ready WASH funding awareness campaign for women JLG borrowers of Micro Finance Institutions, to take forward the common mandate of sustainable rural development.

The event to kickstart the same, at NABARD Mumbai, was inaugurated by Shri Shaji K.V., Chairman, NABARD who, in his keynote address, emphasized the criticality of water availability for the marginalized segments and the need to focus on impact rather than returns to support them. To quote him, “Water is a public good but the water balance is changing due to climate change. It is the most marginalized who face the brunt of climate risk and their livelihoods are getting affected. NABARD being a public finance institution is looking at innovative solutions to support the most needy segment by partnering with Panchayat Raj Institutions, Civil Society organizations, Government agencies to create a larger impact. Awareness generation is key to such solutions.  Our subsidiary NABSAMRUDDHI has piloted the Climate Ready WASH funding programme under which the campaign for creating awareness among end borrowers has been kick-started, with support from NABARD. The mainstreaming of the initiative will help to address these challenges as well”.

Smt. Bonani Roychoudhury, MD,  NABSAMRUDDHI Highlighting the Critical Role of Climate-Smart WASH Funding

NABSAMRUDDHI has been providing concessional wholesale WASH loans by availing refinance from NABARD, blended technical support from its partners Water.org, FINISH Mondial, to foster sustainable livelihoods. So far, 45 Million USD of WASH funding has been provided by the NBFC through 32 partner institutions, covering 75,000 end borrowers, 90% of whom are women.

The campaign will cover 40 block level camps in climate vulnerable areas in 7 states in phase 1 through FINISH Mondial. To support the same, 3 exposure visits had been conducted for stakeholders since NABSAMRUDDHI pioneered the programme in November 2023, while 8 term loans have been sanctioned.

Dr. Rajendra Singh, Waterman of India and Smt. Vedika Bhandarkar, International President and COO, Water.org addressed the gathering through Video messages.

Shri Manoj Gulati, Regional Director, South Asia, Water.org and Shri Ravi Krishan Takkar, Chairman NABSAMRUDDHI addressed the gathering.

Smt. Bonani Roychoudhury, Managing Director, NABSAMRUDDHI underscored COP27 and COP28 declarations on climate resilient WASH, and emphasized the need for collaborative action in funding the last mile segment. The event was attended by Shri G.S. Rawat and Dr A. K. Sood, DMDs of NABARD, Senior Officials of NABARD, Banks, MFIs, NBFCs and technical partners Sa-dhan, GIZ, among others.

The programme was taken up to address the adverse impact of climate change on safe water and sanitation, as a climate crisis majorly manifests as a water crisis, through droughts, floods, melting glaciers, cyclones and salinity of water tables induced by rising sea levels.

The products to be covered for financing will include majorly the following 4 solutions:

                1) Climate smart toilets

                2) Rainwater harvesting for borewell recharge
