Captivating Cheraw Dance of Magnificent Mizoram with Male Performers

This video clip "From the Eyes of Dr Ajay Kumar Ojha" gifts viewers the captivating Cheraw Dance of Mizoram performed specially  by male performers during Mizo Indigenous Games Festival held in Aizawl in November 2015. This dance is characterized by the use of bamboo staves which are kept in cross forms on the ground. In this clip while female dancers  move these bamboo staves in rhythmic beats, the male dancers perform by stepping in stepping out of bamboo blocks. This can be vice versa also.This dance has been recognized as one of the oldest dances of Mizoram. Bamboo Dance or Cheraw Dance  has become an integral part of almost every festival of Mizoram. In the ancient ages, Cheraw  Dance was performed with the hope of providing solace to soul of a deceased mother who had left her newborn child on earth. However, today, the horizon of Cheraw Dance has expanded considerably. In fact this dance is performed on almost every  occasion of Mizoram. The various movements made by the Cheraw Dance dancers are mostly inspired by the nature.  Cheraw  Dance is undoubtedly a most enchanting form of  magnificent Mizoram culture.

The people of Mizoram set a New Guinness World Record on  12th March 2010, for performing the Largest Bamboo Dance in the World. 10,736 people dancing in synchronization. They used 6710 bamboos, dancing on a football field and 3 km of road.

The common costumes worn by the female performers  during Cheraw Dance include - Thihna, Vakiria, Kawrchei and Puanchei. All these traditional costumes of this dance are in vibrant colours which further enhances the beauty & grandeur  of the  surrounding environment.
