Verinag Spring situated in Verinag of Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir lies at the entry point of Kashmir valley right after crossing Jawahar Tunnel and Verinag is also known as Gateway of Kashmir.There is an octagonal stone basin at Verinag Spring and an arcade surrounding it. This spring is known to never dry up or overflow. It is a major source of river Jhelum - known as 'Vitasta' in ancient period. Verinag Spring and arcade surrounding it is officially recognized as a Monument of National Importance by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). This spring is also known as 'Nilakunda'. The spring is at the exact centre almost 50 feet under water from where the water continuously comes up and flows into gardens facing the spring. Verinag Spring is a sacred place for the Hindus as there is Shivlinga in one of the arcs - the very first on the left of the entry of Spring.The historical garden has also an ancient temple.
